What is Sports Injury Osteopathy
Plenty of people enjoy sport and leading an active lifestyle, however, with every sport there is an inherent risk of injury. Regardless of how the injury comes on, whether it is caused by a sudden or by a repetitive movement, or even if you simply want a sports injury performance assessment, we have got you covered.
Whatever your needs are, our detailed process of assessment will ensure that we identify the cause of your problem rather than just treating the symptoms. Our goal is to diagnose, treat and manage your injury so you can return to doing all the activities you love as soon as possible. We take the same comprehensive approach whether you are an elite athlete, a professional dancer or a recreational runner. Our expert treatment is supplemented with advice on how to prevent and actively manage your injury as we believe that educating you enables better management of the problem and will ultimately ensure your recovery is more efficient and complete.
Sports medicine healthcare providers have special training to restore function to injured patients so they can get moving again as soon as possible. They are also knowledgeable about preventing illness and injury in active people.
The goal of any rehabilitation program is to achieve the same functional level observed prior to the injury and to allow for the return to sports practice with minimal risk of recurrence. A physical assessment is performed that includes functional tasks so your osteopath can identify any predisposing factors to injury and formulate an appropriate diagnosis. This allows us to design a treatment and rehabilitation management plan specific to each patient.
What to Expect
During the first consultation, your practitioner will initially take a full and detailed medical history, which will include questions about your general health and lifestyle as well as specific questions about your symptoms or injuries and your personal goals. Relevant test results, blood tests, x-rays and scan reports, should be provided for consideration if available. With your consent, the osteopath will then perform a thorough assessment to evaluate your presenting complaint. This is likely to involve examination of the areas of your body that you are experiencing pain in and directions to perform specific movements. The diagnosis will be discussed with you, and if osteopathic treatment is suitable it will be offered. The number of recommended treatments depends on the type and severity of the injury.
Treatment may involve any combination of manipulation, mobilization, cranial, visceral or neuromuscular techniques, soft tissue massage, acupuncture and rehabilitation exercises. The treatment is tailored to each individual and is supported through advice on posture, lifestyle, and nutrition. This clinical advice aims to help patients understand the nature of their problems so that they can return to their everyday activities as soon as possible.
